Lakeshore Section Descriptions for Eurasian Watermilfoil Monitoring
In association with its Stewardship Program, the Joe's Pond Association (JPA) Milfoil Management Committee (MMC) has designated 10 lakeshore sections to facilitate vigilance, patrolling and survey activities intended to monitor and identify new establishments of the invasive aquatic plant, Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM). Each lakeshore section is described below and depicted on the EWM management map below.
A volunteer Lakeshore Section Coordinator (LSC) will be assigned to each section. The LSC will receive training in EWM identification and geolocation techniques. The LSC will also be responsible for recruiting volunteer surveyors and patrollers, confirming EWM identification when found, providing and ensuring placement of JPA issued marker buoys, determining and transmitting geolocation data (Lat-Long coordinates) to the JPA mapping specialist, notification of the dive team coordinator if EWM is found, and ensuring that the entire littoral zone (out to 10 ft. depth) adjacent to their assigned lakeshore section is monitored regularly. The extent of the littoral zone is also depicted on the EWM management map.
Section Descriptions (see map below):
A. First Pond: entire shoreline from the brook inlet on the north shore at the lower narrows to the US 2 bridge and around to the tip of Point Comfort B. Second Pond North: brook inlet on north shore at lower narrows to the upper narrows C. Second Pond South: Point Comfort to the upper narrows D. Third Pond South: upper narrows to the fishing access E. West Shore Road: fishing access to Meadow Lane F. Sandy Beach: Meadow Lane to Joe's Brook inlet G. Channel Drive: Joe's Brook inlet to Island Drive H. North Shore Road: Island Drive to Smith’s Point I. North Shore/Old Homestead: Smith’s Point to Brown Road J. Old Homestead Road: Brown Road to upper narrows |
EWM Identification, geolocation training, survey techniques, and data transmission protocols will be provided to the LSCs and volunteer patrollers at the time of the JPA spring meeting. Monitoring for and identification of EWM establishment in new areas of the lake is one of the most critical EWM management activities. Please consider volunteering for one of these vital positions.
