2025 Sunfish Races
August 3 Race
We had another great day on the water for the third Sunfish Sailboat Race of the season! With steady wind and sunny skies, four sailors competed in the Single Division. There were no entries in the Double Division this time.
Mark your calendars—the final race of the 2025 season is scheduled for Sunday, August 24. If you're interested in joining the fun, please contact Susan Bouchard. We’d love to see more sailors out on the water!
Following the final race, the Caledonian Cup Award Party will be hosted by Mark and Rosie Smith at their home on North Shore Road. Hope all sailors and their families can celebrate in the festivities.

July 13 Race
There were six entries in the Singles Division and one team entered in the Doubles Division. Jack LaGue had a strong start and stayed ahead of the pack, later calling it one of the best sailing days yet, thanks to steady, consistent winds throughout the race.
We were especially excited to welcome the new boat in the Double Division -- Scott Spencer and Josh Ventrice from Wolcott--who launched from the public access. It was great to have them join the fun, and for now, they're leading the Double Division!

June 22 Race
After a morning of heavy downpours and gloomy skies, the weather took a welcome turn—rain stopped, and the sun even peeked through the lingering dark clouds just in time for the race.
Today’s race featured seven participants in the Single Division, while no boats competed in the Double Division. At the starting horn, the wind was strong, but it quickly became unpredictable—gusty one moment and still the next. Many sailors described the experience at the finish line as “fun but frustrating”, “weird winds” that kept them on their toes.
It was a close contest among Jack LaGue, Jay Chatot, and Lee Erdmann, who stayed tightly grouped throughout much of the course. Jack ultimately crossed the finish line first, followed by Jay, then Lee.
We also welcomed a new face to the race--Phillip Crosby, who shared that he hadn’t sailed in 15 years! It was great to see you out there, Phillip, and your vibrant blue, green, and white sail added a beautiful splash of color to the lake.

The winds for the first Sunfish Sailboat race for 2024 were unpredictable, varying between gusty winds and white caps to dead air in certain areas on the pond. It must be frustrating for the sailors, but they all seemed to have a good time! The weather held out until the end of the race but then it rained buckets as all the sailors had to return home! I know the committee boat got soaked!!!
In the Single Division, Jack LaGue took first place with Jay Chatot and Lee Erdmann right behind him. For the Double Division, Joe Cassani with Jackson Norkeveck crossed the finish line in front of David Porter and his son Henry. In recognition of Dr. Fred Silloway, a special award for the Most Improved Sailor was presented this year. The award was presented by Jack LaGue who sailed with Dr. Silloway when the races started in 1970. The award was presented to Jules Chatot as his cumulative points improved from last year to this year. Dr. Fred Silloway’s granddaughter, Kaitlin Gingue was present along with Jerry Webber, Dr Silloway’s son-in-law.
The Joe’s Pond Association (JPA) would like to thank the Silloway family as they sold their father’s Sunfish sailboat and have donated the proceeds to JPA for the Sunfish sailing community. In addition, we provided T-shirts to our sailors and the support staff.

The weather was perfect for the final Sunfish race. The winners were:
July 23 Race
A perfect day for the 2nd Sunfish Sailboat race after all the rain we have had the past 2-3 weeks. The wind picked up during the afternoon which made it a very competitive race.
In the Single Division, Jack LaGue crossed the finish line just in front of Jay Chatot as Jack was positioned on a starboard tack so he had the right-of-way over Jay. For the Double Division, Lee Erdmann won but Joe Cassani had the lead for a good part of the race.
The final race for 2023 is scheduled Sunday, August 20th with the Award Ceremony following the race. In addition to recognizing the winner of the Single Division and the Double Division, we will present a plaque to the Most Improved Sailor in honor of Dr. Fred Silloway. The Silloway family generously donated the proceeds from the sale of their father’s Sunfish Sailboat to JPA to be used for the sailing community.

There was concern the weather might not cooperate for our first 2023 Sunfish Sailboat race. There was no rain but the sky was hazy and there was a smoky smell due to the fires from our neighbors in the north. The winds would come and go making it difficult for the sailors but they had a good time! Jamie Stewart was our Commodore for the race today.
The results of the race for the Single Division was: 1) Jack LaGue 2) Jules Chatot 3) Jay Chatot 4) Rob Stewart And for the Double Division: 1) Lee Erdmann with granddaughter, Lila 2) Joe Cassani with nephew, Grayson |
